THE SEERED CONSCIENCE

All men are prone to sin. That is a fact with humanity that no man can change. Only God can do that, yet even he chose not to do it right away, because he has a better way of dealing with it once and for all.

Sin is shameful and has the power to cause those who commit it to feel ashamed. That is why when people want to commit sin, they either do it in secret or under the cover of darkness, away from the scrutinizing eyes of others and they judging conscience – for the conscience has been given man to be a judge. It is for the same reason Adam and.Eve fled from before God when they disobeyed and ate of the forbidden fruit.

Contrary to the postmodern views of sin/evil being mere subjective social constructs, the concept of sin is an objective reality deeply ingrained into our conscience by God himself. When he made man, and put in him a mind with a conscience, he made sure to embed into it his moral laws. It doesn’t matter whether the person is religious or not, if only the conscience remains active, those moral codes still remain. But the conscience can die through disuse or neglect.

When someone takes something that belongs to you without your permission, you don’t like it. When an innocent man is murdered without cause or reason, it drives people into an outrage. When an evil man is punished, we feel satisfaction. These feelings are not mere social constructs, as in society telling you what to like and what not to like, and what our emotional responses should be. It goes beyond, way beyond such intellectual and philosophical frivolities. We feel the way we feel about good and evil because these are metaphysical realities we are created with.

As earlier noted, sin is shameful. Thus there is nothing that should cause men to feel proud about that which is shameful, except the conscience be dead, a situation the Apostle Paul describes as having one’s conscience seared with a hot iron. When men get to that point, not only do they seek affirmation and legitimacy for those things that should cause them to feel shame, they also celebrate it, just like we see with sexual perversion and pride month. When we get to that point where the shame is gone, sin is proudly indulged, affirmed, legitimized and celebrated and we see in the cosmic, global explosion in perversion and foolisness, that is a sign God’s restraining hand is has been withdrawn and being withheld. All men can hope to expect is hell itself breaking loose and swallowing them up in his fury.
